There is a range of problems that could mean very expensive repair work post-purchase.īTW, a sterling silver head, or gold plating, etc, does not turn a poorly designed flute into a good one. When buying a second hand flute, get it checked by a GOOD, independent technician - not a shop assistant!!! As with motor vehicles, some models are specific to a certain part of the globe. It is difficult to be specific, because the number brands runs into well over 100, and the number of models runs into many hundreds. There may be better models now, but if you are buying second hand, then you may well be buying a dud with these brands, no matter how nice it looks. For the other brands, even well known ones such as Gemeinhardt, Armstrong, Artley, Selmer, most student models had, and may well still have, a pathetic tone etc compared with Yamaha. You cannot go far wrong with Yamaha, who were probably the first to incorporate good design in their student models. This affects tone/clarity, volume and response. There have been huge improvements in design of flute heads in the last decade or two.
Most people sell instruments because they have become aware of some sort of problem with it. Buying second hand instruments is a can of worms.
